The course includes class, laboratory, and clinical learning experience. The CNA I Refresher course provides an opportunity for nursing assistants to update their knowledge of personal care and basic nursing skills needed for care for patients. The CNA II course prepares graduates to perform more complex skills for patients or residents regardless of the setting.

North Carolina recognizes nurse aides at multiple levels of practice. Nurse Aide I is the basic credential and is required for nursing home duties. It is not mandatory for employment in a nursing home setting. This is a requirement for initial registry placement at the Nursing Assistant I level. Emphasis is placed on patient safety and infection control, the aging process, communication, legal and ethical issues, patient rights, personal care, vital signs, elimination, nutrition, emergencies, rehabilitation, proper body mechanics and mental health.
